The epidermis (Stratum corneum < lucidum < granulosum < spinosum < basale in descending order), the dermis and the hypodermis

• Stratum corneum: This layer consisting of dead cells called keratinocytes helps prevent the penetration of harmful substance.
• Stratum granulosum: This layer contains more keratinocytes moving toward the surface.
• Stratum spinosum: This layer is the thickest layer of the epidermis which contains newly-produced keratinocytes. This layer has the important function of preventing infection.
• Stratum basale: This layer is the closest to the dermis, which continually divides and replaces the rest of the epidermis as it wears away.

The dermis? The dermis is the thick layer beneath the epidermal layer, which takes up 90% of human skin.
It is composed of collagen and elastin fibers, hyaluronic acid, NaPCA. Collagen is a fibrous protein acting as the glue that holds body tissues connected. It retains the water which is NMF(Natural Moisturizing Factor).
